The Spring Festivals

Passover | Unleavened Bread Day 1 & 7 | First Fruits | Counting of the Omer | Shavuot

Passover week includes a multitude of elements. The festival of Passover itself celebrates the sparing of the Israelites from the plague of death poured out on Egypt and is fulfilled in the sacrifice of Yeshua, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. The feast of Unleavened Bread requires holy convocations on days one and seven. This celebration commemorates the Exodus. During this time, we do not eat leavened bread in a physical representation of the spiritual concept of removing sin from our lives after salvation. First Fruits is the giving of the first of the crop to the Lord in the Torah symbolizing the idea that we should bring the first and the best to the Lord as an offering, and Yeshua was the fulfillment of First Fruits in being the first to rise from the dead. The Counting of the Omer begins on the day after the seventh day Shabbat which falls in the week of Passover and continues for 50 days, linking the sacrifice of Yeshua during Passover to the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the Ruach in the New Covenant during Shavuot.

Unleavened Bread

When do we remove the leaven from our homes? Removing the leaven out of our homes symbolizes the removal of sin from our lives. As such, answering this question is crucial in the implications it holds for salvation and sanctification. Please check out our informational video to the left about when we remove the leaven from our households and why. Click here for a written version of our current understanding of the texts surrounding the week of Unleavened Bread.

First Fruits

“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest,” (Leviticus 23:9-10)

First Fruits is the giving of the first of the crop to the Lord in the Torah symbolizing the idea that we should bring the first and the best to the Lord as an offering, and Yeshua was the fulfillment of First Fruits in being the first to rise from the dead.

The Counting of the Omer

“You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the sabbath,  from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there  shall be seven complete sabbaths.” (Leviticus 23:15)

Below is a calendar marking each day of the omer. In addition, each day as you recognize the counting of the omer, whether by counting grain or marking your calendar, recite liturgy from the Counting of the Omer Daily Prayer Guide and engage with a short daily devotional centered on the promises of God.
